Innovation and Higher Education

Canberra is the innovation and education capital of Australia, carrying an estimated 45,000 tertiary students and academic staff across five university campuses.

Canberra's universities

We are home to Australia’s highest ranked international university – the Australian National University – which is also consistently rated at the pinnacle of university performance in Australia.

Similarly, the University of Canberra rates as one of the most vocationally successful universities in Australia and it is growing and driving new and exciting specialisations in sports related disciplines and allied health. This sector drives new knowledge creation for the Canberra economy and adds $1.3 billon per annum in economic activity, around one-third of which is derived from international education.

Other universities in Canberra include the Australian Defence Force Academy UNSW, Australian Catholic University and St Marks Theological College (Charles Sturt University). Further technical, trade and tertiary education is provided by the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT)

A centre of excellence for research and development

Investment in science and technology are strongly linked to innovation capability and performance. Canberra’s education and research institutions attract more than 10 per cent of Australia’s national funding for research and development. As a proportion of the ACT economy, the innovation and higher education sector is around three times the national average. In addition to the university research and postgraduate facilities, CSIRO and Data61 provide another level of research and development and collaborate with universities to sustain a high calibre of collaborative research output, support for innovation, commercial and industry research support and attracting postgraduate research students.
