Defence and Cyber Security

Our city is distinguished by a unique collaborative culture between research, business and government. That is why so astute companies operating inside global supply chains are choosing to base or locate significant operations here.

Australia’s defence and cybersecurity capital

Canberra is headquarters for the Department of Defence, key national security, intelligence and border protection agencies, law enforcement and Australian federal Government. The Department of Defence has one of the highest budgets of any Australian Government agency, with approximately 15 per cent of its total Australian expenditure occurring in the ACT region1.

The city is also the location of the Royal Military College at Duntroon, The Australian Defence Force Academy, The Australian Command and Staff College and nearby Headquarters of Joint Operations Command.

Canberra has more than 13,000 military and defence personnel working in the region and the defence related private sector employment rate is more than double that of the rest of the country2.

Canberra is also home to the Australian National University's National Security College which is a national centre of excellence for executive and professional development, research and teaching in security.

Headquarters for leading global prime contractors

Naturally a presence in Canberra is a strategic advantage for many of the world’s leading defence and aerospace prime contractors including Lockheed Martin, SAAB, British Aerospace and Raytheon.

Canberra born innovations and technologies now feature prominently in key global supply chain solutions for the defence sector, particularly in ISR, cybersecurity, performance improvement of networks, space and spatial sciences and human performance improvement in operation of vehicles, aircraft and equipment.

Locating in Canberra as a supplier to the global defence, aerospace, space and spatial sciences and cyber security industries provides clear advantages including being close to government procuring agencies, ease of administering supply contracts, to collaborate with like-minded businesses, and to access advanced research, development and test facilities.
